The Library of Babel
Book Design, Art Direction
2022
The design and layout of a 12-spread hardcover handmade book based on the short story, The Library of Babel, by author Jorge Luis Borges.
The book is conceptualized from the eyes of a 20th century architect wishing to order and catalogue the findings from the text, in order to understand the enormous structure of the Library of Babel (“The Universe, which others call the library”).
A copy of the book can be found in the permanent collection of the Visual Communication Design department at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago.
Detail shots
The objects -or “found” artifacts depicted, except for 3 paintings by Magritte and Escher (not pictured here), were designed and edited to support the narrative and fit within the same “world”. The photos of the "Library" were captured by Maria Merino at the Biblioteca Vasconcelos in Mexico City.
